Additional Backup Information:

On December 14, 2017, Council authorized the submittal of potential transportation projects for the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) 2019-2022 Call for Projects.

CAMPO awarded funding for this project's implementation in 2019, but it was deferred in 2020 when CAMPO reprioritized regional transportation funding to support the I-35 Capital Express Project. As part of that decision, federal Surface Transportation Block Grant funds, including those designated for this project were indefinitely deferred.

In 2024 CAMPO’s Transportation Policy Board adopted a resolution to restore funding for this project. This action allows the City to proceed with implementing the traffic monitoring cameras project.

The purpose of this item is to authorize the negotiation and execution of an Advance Funding Agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation accepting and appropriating funds for the installation of additional traffic monitoring cameras at signalized intersections.

This project will enhance the City’s current traffic monitoring network through the installation of additional traffic cameras which will strengthen the City’s ability to share real-time traffic information and monitoring functions with regional transportation management partners.

By expanding the existing system, the City will be better equipped to identify and verify incidents quickly, adjust signal timing to reduce congestion, and improve overall response times. The new cameras will increase coverage of the transportation network, providing greater system resilience and operational continuity.

This project is supported by federal funding through CAMPO’s Surface Transportation Program Metropolitan Mobility initiative, totaling up to $713,855. Local match funding of $161,090 is available in Fiscal Year 2025-2026 in the Capital Budget of Austin Transportation and Public Works. Final funding amounts will depend on actual implementation costs. Austin Transportation and Public Works will manage the project.

This project is located city-wide.
