Additional Backup Information:
This contract is for the purchase of the EZ-IO® intraosseous infusion systems and supplies. Each ambulance in the Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services is currently equipped with this system that is used to obtain emergency vascular access for patients when typical peripheral intravenous access is difficult or impossible.
This system consists of a proprietary patented needle and power driver technology as there are no other battery-powered intraosseous products currently available in the marketplace. The EZ-IO® medical supplies are approved by the Food and Drug Administration and prescribed for use by Emergency Medical Service providers under the practicing medical license of the Office of the Medical Director. Teleflex LLC is the sole manufacturer and distributor of the EZ-IO® intraosseous infusion system in the United States. All field staff are trained using this model and replacement equipment and supplies must be compatible with the existing stock to ensure the interoperability and a uniform standard of training and practice.
The contract will replace an existing contract which expired on December 10, 2024. The requested authorization amount is based on historical spend and forecasting estimates for future needs.
A delay in contract approval will impact the City’s survival rates for patients in cardiac arrest due to the inability to deliver lifesaving medications effectively.
