Additional Backup Information:
The contract is for the purchase of air cushion swing check valves, including repair services when necessary. Air cushion swing check valves are essential for pump operations at all Austin Water facilities. Continuous years of operation, the intensity of usage, and calcium build-up in the check valves cause wear and tear over time. Many of the current check valves have reached the end of their useful life and their design is not conducive to repair; however, the new models under this contract can be repaired in the future and have a proven robust design with a high-quality casting.
Air-cushioned swing check valves are used on the discharge side of a pump. In the event of a power loss during normal operation, the check valve will slam closed to prevent the reverse flow of water and prevent the higher pressure plain from emptying back into the lower plain. It will also prevent damage to the pump. The air cushion feature reduces the shock from the slamming effect to prevent damage to the check valve and piping by cushioning the closing of the valve.
The requested amount for this contract was determined by repairs due to aging equipment and estimated replacement units.
