Additional Backup Information:

As a core component of the “Repowering Downtown” initiative, Austin Energy is upgrading the Brackenridge Substation to modern gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) to replace aging 1970s equipment and support rapidly growing electrical demand in downtown Austin. This project is a complex and multi-year effort that involves de-energizing the existing substation, rerouting power to an adjacent facility, demolishing the open-air substation, and rebuilding it as a new GIS substation.

Due to high costs of project equipment already purchased, additional authorization is needed to purchase the remaining equipment, materials, supplies, and cover cost of demolition and site preparation. With an estimated construction start of June 2027, the Design Builder will bid the work and provide a cost for construction.  The project team will return to council for any additional authorization needed to complete the project.

This project is confined to city property.  The public may experience short term traffic control impacts on the south access road of Interstate Highway 35 due to project site deliveries.

This project is located within zip code 78701 (District 9).
