Additional Backup Information:
On November 19, 2024, Council approved Ordinance No. 20241119-002 ordering a runoff election to be held in the City of Austin on December 14, 2024, for the purpose of electing a City Council Member for District 7; providing for the conduct of the election; and declaring an emergency. This ordinance amends the original ordinance ordering the runoff election to add exhibits with information and agreements that were not yet available or executed when the original election ordinance was adopted. This information is not required to be in the ordinance that orders the election and instead is provided by Travis County after the initial election ordinance is executed. The initial election ordinance must be amended in order for Council to officially adopt the election day polling places (Exhibit D) and to appoint the following: election day judges (Exhibit E), central counting station staff (Exhibit F), early voting ballot board members (Exhibit G), and signature verification committee members to compare the signatures on applications for ballot by mail to the corresponding carrier envelopes (Exhibit H), as required by the Texas Election Code. The law does not require Council to attach executed English and Spanish versions of the ordinance calling the election (Exhibit B) or attach an executed joint election agreement with Travis County establishing the parties’ roles and responsibilities for the conduct of the runoff election (Exhibit C), but we do so for the public’s awareness and information.
