The contract is for the purchase of firearms, parts, and accessories to replace the aging inventory of existing duty rifles for patrol officers and the Counter Attack Strike Team (CAST) of the Austin Police Department. As with all city owned firearms, the aging inventory will be decommissioned according to the direction outlined in Resolution 20180510-047.
The AR-15 duty rifle can be configured in several ways to accomplish a number of life-saving missions. The rifles will be assigned to officers to be carried in patrol vehicles for strategic deployment in active shooter or active attack situations and high-risk warrant apprehensions and hostage incidents. CAST is a multi-discipline response team comprised of officers and other public safety entities which provide a coordinated response to mass casualty events. This equipment needed to meet the expectations of partner agencies to ensure their safety when critical incidents occur and to secure first responder operations during mass casualty events.
This is a one-time purchase could impact the replacement schedule putting officers and partner first responders at risk during critical incidents.
