Council Committee, Boards and Commission Action:

On June 3, 2024, the Art in Public Places (AIPP) Panel approved the Prospectus/Limited Entry Pool selection method for the architecturally-ntegrated AIPP projects for the Austin Convention Center redevelopment, totaling $12 million.

 

On July 15, 2024, the Arts Commission approved the Prospectus/ Limited Entry Pool selection method for the architecturally-integrated AIPP projects for the Austin Convention Center redevelopment, totaling $12,000,000.

 

On August 19, 2024, the Arts Commission approved the Limited Entry Pool Nominated Artist List and the Selection Panel List for the architecturally-integrated AIPP projects for the Austin Convention Center redevelopment, pending AIPP Panel approval on September 9, 2024.

 

On September 9, 2024, the AIPP Panel unanimously approved the Limited Entry Pool Nominated Artist List and the Selection Panel List for the architecturally-integrated AIPP projects for the Austin Convention Center redevelopment, totaling $12 million.

 

On November 4 and 18, 2024, the Arts Commission unanimously approved the selected Artists and Alternates for the architecturally-integrated AIPP projects for the Austin Convention Center redevelopment, totaling $12,000,000.

 

Additional Backup Information:

The Economic Development Department’s AIPP program is the City’s public art program funded from two percent of eligible capital improvement project budgets. The AIPP program will commission public art for the for the Austin Convention Center redevelopment.

 

Phase I of the AIPP component for the Austin Convention Center redevelopment project will be 10 Architecturally-Integrated projects totaling $12,000,000. Twenty percent of this budget, $2,400,000, will go directly to the artist contracts (Design Phase; Fabrication/Installation Monitoring). Eighty percent of this budget will go toward the fabrication and installation of the artwork through Design Team Project Delivery. The Construction Manager at Risk will produce the final product.

 

The 10 local Austin artists were selected through a Limited Entry Pool (LEP). Artists were nominated to this LEP by a nomination panel comprised of local arts leaders. A Selection Panel reviewed the 62 artist submission in the LEP, and met on October 3, 2024, October 17, 2024, and October 18, 2024 to discuss and select 10 artists and five alternates.

 

The goals of this project are to reflect the culture, creativity, and vibe that create our shared experience of Austin; integrate seamlessly into the site, facility, building, finishes, and infrastructure; employ sustainable materials and processes in the creation of the artwork; and convey the mission of the Austin Convention Center to promote Austin as a premier destination.

 

Exhibit A includes a list of artists and alternates recommended for this project. The $2,400,000 of funds will be divided equally. Each selected Artist will receive a contract in the amount of $240,000.
