The contracts will provide temporary staffing of qualified traffic signal and fiber optic communication technicians to supplement Austin Transportation and Public Works’ (TPW) staff in maintaining, modifying and expanding the City’s traffic signal system and fiber optic communication network.
Access to on-demand, skill-specific traffic signal and fiber optic technicians will give TPW the flexibility needed to meet operational targets and project deadlines as workloads fluctuate throughout the year, including delivery of bond and grant funded safety and mobility projects. Current staffing cannot fully absorb the demand for emergency repairs, preventive maintenance, technology upgrades and new projects. Access to temporary, qualified technicians will help keep critical projects and maintenance on schedule without service gaps.
From a minimal pool of qualified providers staff has identified three firms able to perform these services. Each has a long-standing record with the City. Their history with the City on signal and communications work and established familiarity with City infrastructure, policies, and procedures support both vendor qualification and price fairness in a limited-provider market.
This is a new contract. The requested authorization amount was determined by departmental estimates and historical spend. The recommended contractors have provided similar services in the past.
A delay in issuing these contracts could slow the delivery of essential signal and communication improvements across the City, potentially impacting the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the City’s transportation network.
