Funding in the amount of $2,000,000 is available from U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants Inc for the period from January 1, 2026, through September 30, 2026. A fiscal note is attached.

 

Prior Council Action:

September 26, 2024 - Council approved Ordinance No. 20240926-062 which approved amending the Fiscal Year 2024-2025 Austin Public Health Department Operating Budget Special Revenue Fund (Ordinance No. 20240814-007) to accept and appropriate an additional $1,800,000 in grant funds from the United States Committee for Refugees and Immigrants, for the Refugee Health Grant. The item was approved on a 10-0 vote, with Council Member Harper-Madison off the dais.

This funding is provided by United States Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) for Federal Fiscal Year 2025-2026, starting January 1, 2026, through September 30, 2026.

 

The goal of the USCRI Refugee Health Grant is to provide health screening, assessment, referral services, and follow-up for Refugees, Amerasians, Cuban/Haitian Entrants, Asylees, and U. S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Refugee Resettlement-certified victims of severe forms of trafficking, certain Iraqis and Afghans granted special immigrant status by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.

 

Council approval in Fiscal Year 2024-2025 authorized acceptance of up to $5,000,000 in USCRI grant funds and 13 full time positions.

 

The General Fund will not be required to contribute additional funds beyond those currently budgeted to this grant or to the funding of this position. When the grant funds expire, the Austin Public Health Department’s need for this position will be evaluated and the position may be eliminated.
