June 11, 2020 - Council authorized the negotiation and execution of an agreement with TRUSONIC, LLC in an amount not to exceed $260,000 for artwork for the Terminal/Apron Expansion and Improvement Project at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Art in Public Places (AIPP) Phase IIb on an 11-0 vote.

On February 3, 2020, the AIPP Panel unanimously approved the selection process recommendation for the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Terminal/Apron Expansion and Improvement Phase IIb AIPP Project, naming the artist team of Josef Kristofoletti (dba TRUSONIC, LLC) and Matthew Mazzotta as the selected artist and Laurie Frick as the alternate artist. (Motion by Barnes, second by Lemmo; approved 7-0-0). 

On April 20, 2020, the Arts Commission unanimously approved the selection process recommendation for the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Terminal/Apron Expansion and Improvement Phase IIb AIPP Project, naming the artist team of Josef Kristofoletti and Matthew Mazzotta as the selected artist and Laurie Frick as the alternate artist. (Motion by Mok, second by Fonte; approved 8-0-0, Barnes absent).

 

On May 1, 2023, the AIPP Panel approved the Final Design for the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Terminal/Apron Expansion and Improvement Phase IIb AIPP Project by Artists Josef Kristofoletti and Matthew Mazzotta. (Motion by Villanueva, second by Muzacz; approved 5-0-0).

 

On May 6, 2024, the AIPP Panel approved an updated artwork budget for the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Terminal/Apron Expansion and Improvement Phase IIb AIPP Project with Artists Josef Kristofoletti and Matthew Mazzotta (dba AUS Radiant Productions, LLC). (Motion by Carr, second by Davis; approved 7-0-0). 

 

On May 20, 2024, the Arts Commission approved an updated artwork budget for the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Terminal/Apron Expansion and Improvement Phase IIb AIPP Project with Artists Josef Kristofoletti and Matthew Mazzotta. (Motion by Schmalbach, second by Medicharla; approved 6-0-0).

 

Additional Backup Information:

AIPP, which is part of the Cultural Arts Division, Economic Development Department, sought to commission a local professional visual artist to design, fabricate and install artwork for the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Terminal/Apron Expansion and Improvement Phase IIb AIPP Project. The goal of the project was to commission an Austin-based artist or artist team who will, in collaboration with Aviation staff and community stakeholders, design artwork that 1) enhances the travellers’ experience by piquing curiosity and/or conveying a sense of wonder; 2) distinguishes Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and reflects the nature and character of Austin; 3) supports the Airport’s commitment to sustainability; 4) contributes to a local, regional and national contemporary art dialogue; and 4) serves as a significant piece within the artist’s oeuvre.

 

This public art opportunity was open to local Austin artists previously selected for the 2018-2020 Local Pre-Qualified Artist Pool who are not currently contracted with the City of Austin for a permanent public artwork commission. Artists selected for the 2018-2020 Local Pre-Qualified Artist Pool were at least 18 years of age and live and work in Williamson, Travis, Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Burnet and Blanco counties. The total budget available for this project was $260,000.

 

On October 29, 2019, the jury reviewed 29 applications and recommended eight artists as project finalists. On January 17, 2020, the jury interviewed finalists and recommended the artist team of Josef Kristofoletti (dba TRUSONIC, LLC) and Matthew Mazzotta as the selected artist and Laurie Fricke as the alternate for this opportunity, one of three Art in Public Places opportunities for local artists for the Terminal/Apron Expansion and Improvement Phase II Project at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. 

 

On February 3, 2020, the AIPP Panel unanimously approved the selection process recommendation for the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Terminal/Apron Expansion and Improvement Phase IIb AIPP Project, naming the artist team of Josef Kristofoletti (dba TRUSONIC, LLC) and Matthew Mazzotta (dba SOCIAL SPACE LLC) as the selected artist and Laurie Frick as the alternate artist. (Motion by Barnes, second by Lemmo; approved 7-0-0).

On September 12, 2022, Artists Josef Kristofoletti and Matthew Mazzotta presented their Mid-Design to the AIPP Panel. No action was taken.

 

On May 1, 2023, the AIPP Panel approved the Final Design for the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Terminal/Apron Expansion and Improvement Phase IIb AIPP Project by Artists Josef Kristofoletti and Matthew Mazzotta. (Motion by Villanueva, second by Muzacz; approved 5-0-0).

  

On March 29, 2024, the AIPP program issued of Notice of Termination for Convenience to Artists Josef Kristofoletti and Matthew Mazzotta for the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Terminal/Apron Expansion and Improvement Phase IIb AIPP Project. The reason for termination was a signed “User Department Public Art Evaluation Form for Technical Feasibility and Maintenance” for the proposed Final Design was not provided by the Department of Aviation (“Sponsoring Department”) to the AIPP program. 

 

 

 

To issue a new contract and restart the design process for the Terminal/Apron Expansion and Improvement Phase IIb AIPP Project with Artists Josef Kristofoletti and Matthew Mazzotta, a new site within Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and a new budget of $1,000,000 were identified by Department of Aviation and AIPP staff.

 

On May 6, 2024, the AIPP Panel approved an updated artwork budget for the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Terminal/Apron Expansion and Improvement Phase IIb AIPP Project with Artists Josef Kristofoletti and Matthew Mazzotta, who have now formed a company named AUS Radiant Productions, LLC. (Motion by Carr, second by Davis; approved 7-0-0).
