Additional Backup Information:

On December 14, 2017, Council authorized the submittal of potential transportation projects for the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) 2019-2022 Call for Projects.

CAMPO awarded funding for this project's implementation in 2019, but it was deferred in 2020 when CAMPO reprioritized regional transportation funding to support the I-35 Capital Express Project. As part of that decision, federal Surface Transportation Block Grant funds, including those designated for this project were indefinitely deferred.

In 2024, CAMPO’s Transportation Policy Board adopted a resolution to restore funding for this project. This action allows the City of Austin to proceed with implementing enhancements to the City’s Advanced Traffic Management System and the expansion of the traffic signal communication network.

This project will strengthen the City’s Emergency Vehicle Preemption and Transit Signal Priority systems, establish a platform for sharing traffic signal data with regional transportation management partners, and expand the communication network with new fiber lines to improve reliability and system resiliency.

These enhancements will reduce emergency response times, improve transit travel efficiency, and ensure more coordinated and resilient operations across the regional transportation network.

The project is supported by federal funding through CAMPO’s Surface Transportation Program - Metropolitan Mobility initiative for a total project cost up to $6,314,535. Local matching funds of $1,437,946 are included in the Fiscal Year 2025-2026 Austin Transportation & Public Works Capital Budget. The remaining project costs of $329,761 reflect the State's participation amount. Final funding amounts will be determined based on actual implementation costs. Austin Transportation and Public Works will oversee project management and delivery.

This project is located within all Council districts.
