The Elisabet Ney Museum is the site of the former studio of renowned 19th century sculptor Elisabet Ney and houses the largest collection of her work. The museum sits on a site of 100,000 square feet of property in the historic Hyde Park Neighborhood of Central Austin and is visited by 21,000 local, national, and international guests each year. The Museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, designated as a Texas State Antiquities Landmark, a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, a City of Austin Historic Landmark, a contributing site to the Hyde Park National Register Historic district and the Hyde Park Local Historic District, and is a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios program.
Work to the approximately 3,700 square foot museum facility will include restoration of original wood exterior doors and windows, replacement of the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning system, replacement of the general and exhibit lighting and their control system, roof repairs, masonry, plumbing, interior finishes, and woodwork. Exterior work to the property will include replacement of the pedestrian bridge across Waller Creek with a steel pedestrian bridge and installation of accessible pathways. The site work also includes approximately 20,000 square feet of Waller Creek bank stabilization. Funding for this restoration project is provided through 2012 Bond, Proposition 14, the Parkland Dedication Fund, the Historic Preservation Fund, and the Friends of the Elisabet Ney Museum.
As this restoration project of a historic former residence unknown subsurface or other conditions may be encountered, a 10% contingency is included to support any unforeseen construction costs. By authorizing the additional contingency funding, Council is authorizing any change orders within the contingency amount.
A delay in contract approval could impact the City’s ability to maintain this historically significant building and its artwork. Elisabet Ney is a profoundly important figure in Texas art and State History and the City’s care of the museum and grounds is vital to its preservation.
The contract allows 405 calendar days to complete construction.
This project is located within zip code 78751 (District 9).
