The contract provides employee exams and associated medical testing. These services include physical examinations, cadet medical screening, return-to-duty evaluations, cardiology services, chest x-ray and interpretation services for calcium scores for Austin Fire, Austin - Travis County Emergency Medical, Austin Police, and Austin Watershed Protection. These services augment the Public Safety Wellness program.
Austin Fire was awarded the Assistance to Firefighters Grant from the Department of Homeland Security. The purpose of this grant is to protect the health and safety of firefighting personnel. The objective is to provide coronary artery calcium (CAC) scans for firefighters 40 or more years of age. The CAC scans will help identify firefighters at risk for cardiovascular disease during their annual medical evaluations. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, sudden cardiac deaths remain the leading cause of line of duty deaths. Providing these services will enable the Public Safety Wellness Center to adhere to the mission of empowering first responders to lifelong wellness. The additional testing will allow Public Safety Wellness Center to improve early detection and prevention of cardiovascular disease.
