Additional Backup Information:
The contract will provide Emergency Medical Services (EMS) with portable refrigeration units that will allow EMS personnel to carry and provide blood into a wide variety of emergency situations such as festivals, mass gatherings, and other special events. Each unit has a five-year service life; the contract will allow EMS to purchase new units to replace older units at a steady rate over the term of the contract. These units will be installed in EMS vehicles and boats and enhance the community’s access to blood products.
This is a new contract. This contract is with EMS, but units will be shared with Austin-Travis County EMS as part of the EMS Blood Program.
If a contract is not secured, EMS will have limited access to an immediate source of blood when operating in the field. Without these units, the ability of EMS to provide injured individuals with blood diminishes, along with their ability to save lives.
