The project will implement critical multimodal safety and mobility improvements at Burleson Road and Stassney Lane/Montopolis Drive as part of the 2020 Safety and Active Transportation Bond and the Fiscal Year 2022 Safe Streets for All Federal Grant. Additionally, this construction contract will serve programs such as Vision Zero/Safety, Bikeways, Transit Enhancement, and Signals.
This project was identified and developed with safety, operations, and connectivity in mind for all modes of transportation and is designed to reduce crashes across all transportation modes, increase safety, and improve mobility and accessibility for pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit riders. The planned improvements include the addition of raised medians for access management, enhanced pedestrian and bicycle facilities, signal infrastructure upgrades, bus stop upgrades, intersection reconfiguration, and associated signing, striping, and paving.
Due to the potential for unforeseen issues presented at the time of construction, a 10% contingency in funding has been included to allow for the expeditious processing of any change orders. A contingency is an additional amount of money added to the construction budget to cover any unforeseen construction costs associated with the project. By authorizing the additional contingency funding, Council is authorizing any change orders within the contingency amount.
The project calls for lane closures at intersection approaches during construction. A minimum of one lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained at all times. The contractor will work to ensure that residents and businesses have access to their driveways. Property owner(s) will be notified at least 48 hours in advance of planned interruptions. Capital Metro will be notified of impacts to bus stops or bus routes at least two weeks in advance of traffic control changes.
A delay in issuing this contract may affect the delivery of critical safety and multimodal improvements at this intersection in Austin.
Construction is expected to begin in August 2026, and the approximate project duration is five months, barring no weather delays or other unforeseen circumstances.
This project is located within zip code 78744 (District 2).
