July 29, 2021 - Council approved Ordinance No. 20210729-061, which approved the acceptance of additional WIC grant funds and 3.0 full-time equivalent grant positions on consent on Council Member Ellis’s motion, Council Member Kitchen's second on an 11-0 vote.
April 8, 2021 - Council approved Ordinance No. 20210408-015, which approved the acceptance of additional WIC grant funds on consent on Council Member Kitchen's motion, Council Member Alter's second on a 10-0 vote. Council Member Renteria was off the dais.

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a preventative program that serves women and children at or below 185% of the federal poverty income level. The program provides nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and nutritious foods to pregnant women, infants, and children up to age five.
The grant also provides a lactation center for mothers with breastfeeding problems, a training center for local agency staff and other health providers to receive clinical experience working with breastfeeding mothers and a statewide breastfeeding resource center for health providers to utilize for information and assistance when working with pregnant and breastfeeding women.
The current approved grant appropriation in the Fiscal Year 2024-2025 budget is $9,000,000. The requested increase of $5,751,133.60 per fiscal year represents the difference between the current grant appropriation in and the grant award of $14,751,133.60 per fiscal year from Fiscal Year 2026-2030. The additional funds will be used to cover increases in personnel and operation costs and are not expected to increase performance measures.
The General Fund will not be required to contribute additional funds beyond those currently budgeted to this grant. When the grant funds expire, the Austin Public Health Department’s need for continuing funding will be evaluated.
