In order to modify or alter the existing speed limit of a street, Texas Traffic Laws require that a traffic engineering investigation be performed. The Transportation Engineering Division of Austin Transportation and Public Works (ATPW) investigated existing school zones for students attending Pond Springs Elementary School, but not in City Code Section 12-4-64 (D) (Table of Speed Limits), to determine if they are appropriate.
Several years ago, and prior to annexation of this area by the City, Williamson County implemented school zones of 20 miles per hour during certain times on Elkhorn Mountain Trail, Oro Valley Trail, and Pheasant Rock Road.
ATPW reviewed the existing school zones and determined them to be appropriate. Therefore, we recommend adding the following amendments to City Code Section 12-4-64 (D) Table of Speed limits to reflect existing field conditions:
Add: Elkhorn Mountain Trail from Wilderness Drive from 57 feet north of Buckshot Trail to 37 feet south of Tantara Court (Pond Springs Elementary School). (20 MPH) (SZ)
