Additional Backup Information:

The Sobering Center serves individuals who meet the legal definition of intoxication. The Austin-Travis County Sobriety Center Local Government Corporation d/b/a the Sobering Center (LGC) operates the Sobering Center and aims to enhance public health and public safety by providing an alternative to the emergency room and jail whereby individuals are referred and transported to the facility by law enforcement or emergency medical services.

Since 2018, the Office of the Chief Medical Officer, now within the Emergency Medical Services Department (EMS), has provided clinical oversight of the activities at the Sobering Center, including Advanced Life Support, First Responder Organization licenses, and oversight of EMS-certified personnel employed by the LGC.

The interlocal agreement provides for an initial 12-month term ending on September 30, 2024 with four 12-month renewal options. It was necessary for the parties to execute the agreement prior to Council action due to the timing of the expiration of the previous agreement between the parties and to prevent a lapse in services.
