This budget amendment will support the acquisition, planning, and development of parkland to meet various goals identified in Austin Parks and Recreation's Long Range Plan and will advance Citywide Strategic Plan Goal CH.2: to ensure and preserve equitable access to parks, trails, open space, and recreational opportunities. Austin Parks and Recreation prioritizes parkland acquisition and development in park-deficient areas to increase the percentage of residents within walking distance of a park. Securing parkland along the Colorado River corridor is also a top priority, as it helps ensure that critical park connections are not lost to development pressure.
These Parks and Wildlife Code Chapter 26 mitigation funds were received from TxDOT in late fiscal year 2024-2025 and early fiscal year 2025-2026 for the taking of parkland associated with the IH-35 Capital Express Central Project, which impacted Waller Beach at Town Lake Metro Park, Edward Rendon Sr. Metro Park, and Riverside Shores at Town Lake Metro Park.
