In accordance with each cable company's state-issued franchise, the City of Austin receives fees from each cable provider serving the Austin area to pay for capital expenses related to the operations of Austin's public, educational, and governmental (PEG) access television channels. The annual PEG fee contribution from the cable providers is currently $1 million.

Staff is seeking to execute an interlocal agreement with Austin Independent School District (AISD) for the allocation up to $100,00 towards the AISD PEG equipment purchase. AISD operates and manages one of Austin's two educational access channels and has presented $100,000 in capital equipment needs to the City for video production equipment. The new equipment will allow encoding for YouTube, Facebook, and Vimeo live streaming along with sending feed to the AISD master control room and other equipment to enhance video production. The entire purchase will be directed by AISD to ensure that all equipment is compatible with required uses and AISD will cover any remaining costs.
