Additional Backup Information:
In order to establish, modify or alter the existing speed limit of a street, the Texas traffic laws require that a traffic engineering investigation be performed. The Austin Transportation Department (ATD) conducted an investigation of Salt Springs Drive in accordance with the procedures specified in the Texas Department of Transportation’s Texas Procedures for Establishing Speed Zones, 2006 and the Federal Highway Administration’s USLIMITS2 tool.
The Austin Transportation Department recommends establishing a speed limit of 35 miles per hour on Salt Springs Drive from William Cannon Drive (East) to Thaxton Road. Salt Springs is an undivided two-way, two- lane, collector with bike lanes. Currently, the speed limit is 40 miles per hour. The recommendation will be more appropriate for the context of the roadway given the connectivity it provides for residential streets. Additionally, there is an elementary school adjacent to the roadway. ATD recommends the following amendment to City Code Section 12-4-64 (D) (Table of Speed Limits):
Delete:
Salt Springs Drive from William Cannon Drive (East) to Thaxton Road. (40 MPH)
Add:
Salt Springs Drive from William Cannon Drive (East) to Thaxton Road. (35 MPH)
