Council Committee, Boards and Commission Action:
On July 18, 2022, the Austin Arts Commission unanimously approved the selection process recommendation for the Givens Park Aquatics Facility AIPP Project, naming Melissa Borrell Design as the selected artist and Sam Gaddis as the alternate for the $95,000 commission. The item passed on consent. (Motion by Commissioner Polgar, second by Commissioner Castillo; approved 7-0-0. Commissioners Barnes, Flores, Garza, and Keeton were absent).

Artist Melissa Borrell was commissioned by the Economic Development Department's Art in Public Places program to create a permanent artwork at the Givens Pool to honor the history, heritage, culture, and stories of the Givens Park community, celebrate the diverse and vibrant energy of family and togetherness, and inspire feelings of curiosity, joy, pride, and hope for the future. She has been working closely with the sponsor department (Parks and Recreation) and the community to develop a design that responds to these goals.
Thorough engagement during the design phase of the project with local community, stakeholders, design team and City staff resulted in consensus direction for Borrell to incorporate a shade structure at the west end of the Givens Pool into her scope of work to enhance the community's experience of the Pool and align with an aesthetic approa...
